Irreversible Marks
‘Irreversible Marks’ focuses on the derelict site of Whitchurch Psychiatric Hospital. Between the late Victorian and Edwardian era there was a gradual shift in the medical treatment of patients. It challenged the existing stereotypes and stigmas of mental health.
As I wandered around the exterior of the hospital, I sought to find metaphorical symbolism that reflected the building and its wide history. Institutionalised places hold a sense of mystery as they are/ were unknown, and unseen places. When exploring the institution in Cardiff, I was influenced by archival news reports and the statements made about the hospital.
Each time I re-visited, I discovered various amounts of change; all be it very small – I looked for details within the environment that spoke about the hospital and might give any insight into what went on behind its walls. I hope to encourage my audience to question and explore such possible complexities.
I was inspired by the genre of Late Photography and the eerie ambience I felt knowing that something quite intense had been happening here, up until recently (2016) - This influenced my approach to the subject matter.
Although I am aware that the institution modernised in its later years – I find it interesting how the outside shell of the Victorian building was still dominated by a negative look and stigma.
